The economic and cultural centre of Turkey, Istanbul is the only city in the world nestled on the banks of two continents: Europe and Asia. Although officially a city of almost 13 million, it is widely believed that the city itself houses over 18 million people (easily seen if you stroll down Istiklal Street at night)! The vibrant economy has helped establish and maintain some of the finest universities and highschools in the country – not to mention attracts bright and prospective students.
Ankara
Ankara is the capital of Turkey and the heart of the Turkish government and all foreign embassies. As the second largest city in the country it is also an important industrial and commercial centre of Turkey. Considered a serious university centre, Ankara is proud of its many renouned universities – several of which are the most reputable in Turkey.
Izmir
Called the gateway to modern Turkey, Izmir is a lively seaport city situated on the Aegean coast – third in size by population and the second largest city after Istanbul. Izmir is a liberal city that is home to excellent universities and highschools and posseses a healthy student population. The student population is made up of dynamic, forward thinkers and future policy makers and the city boasts leading educational establishments and top industry.
Bursa
A rapidly developing industrial and commercial center in the northwest of Turkey, Bursa was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire and has a highly developed automotive, machinery, textile and food industry. Bursa’s first university, Uludag Univerity, has 40,000 students.
Canakkale
Canakkale Province, like Istanbul Province, has territory in both Europe and Asia. Ferries cross here to the northern (European) side of the strait. The city is the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy. The “wooden horse” from the 2004 movie Troy is exhibited on the seafront.
Kocaeli
The short distance to major metropolises and the Marmara Sea have facilitated Kocaeli’s development as an industrial, commercial, transportation, and logistics centre. There are lots of harbour facilities within Kocaeli, including the primary base of the Turkish Navy. The title of the city is the industrial capital of Turkey.
Adana
Named among the “25 European Regions of the Future for 2006/2007” by Foreign Direct Investment Magazine for its high standard of life and human resources, Adana is Turkey’s fourth most populous city. The city itself is well located, surrounded by many great university cities like Tarsus, Mersin, Gaziantep and Hatay. Although often overlooked, Adana an important market and represents an entrance into the south eastern Turkey market. Cukurova University has 33,000 students.
Gaziantep
Gaziantep is located in Turkey’s southeast and is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. It is the sixth most populous city in Turkey and houses the main campus of Gaziantep University and the private university, Zirve University.
Kayseri
The Kayseri Province, in central Turkey, covers an area of 16,917 km², and it borders with Sivas, Adana, Nigde, Kahramanmaras, Yozgat and NevÅŸehir provinces. Kayseri is an area that has been linked with mythological stories as well as important figures in Turkish history. It is located in Anatolia, and surrounded by the Mount Erciyes, the Mount Hasan and the Mount Ali. The Ali mountain is named like that in honor of Ali Baba, who is said to have lived in the area.
Nevsehir
Nevsehir is a province in central Turkey. Its adjacent provinces are KırÅŸehir to the northwest, Aksaray to the southwest, Nigde to the south, Kayseri to the southeast, and Yozgat to the northeast. Nevsehir includes the area called Cappadocia – a very popular tourist attraction in Turkey. The famous town of Goreme is also located in Nevsehir.
